Where to Stay Cool, Win $5K, and Watch Polo for Free
Submit your art to BUR, spin your vinyl in Canoga Park, and catch free polo in Burbank—plus a splash pad guide for summer survival.

Good morning!
Lots of coverage of the East Side of the Valley today. And while I try to keep it pretty lighthearted, there is a public service announcement regarding possible measles exposure. The likelihood of someone reading this having been exposed is extremely small, but I wanted to do my part in keeping folks informed in the off chance someone was affected. Let’s get into it!
Did You Know - The 405 freeway traces the path of a 19th-century wagon trail built by Isaac Lankershim to haul wheat from the San Fernando Valley to Santa Monica—long before it became LA’s most infamous traffic jam?

🎨 Your Art Could Land at BUR Airport

From elevatebur.com
Amid a huge upgrade, the Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) is calling all artists—from seasoned pros to doodlers with ambition—to submit their work for a rotating light box art display in the swanky new terminal opening in 2026.
💰️ $5,000 per selected artist
🖼️ 12-month license for your work to be seen by thousands of sleepy-eyed travelers and “I’m late for my flight!” joggers
🎯 No public art experience required (Yes, your bedroom gallery counts.)
Other upgrades includes a dramatic silver-screen-inspired terminal, a massive new sculpture, and 355,000 square feet of upgraded boarding bliss.
They're looking for artwork that captures the culture and history of Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena, while still feeling fresh—even to the TSA agent who’ll seen it 200 times.
Tryptic designs (3 panels, each 5 ft high x 7 ft wide)
2-D artwork created digitally or suitable for high-res scanning
No AI art allowed, and work must be your own original creation
Deadline? This Wednesday, June 11. So don’t wait until your art is “perfect.” Airports run on deadlines, after all.
📧 Click here to submit an application for entry.

📻️ Matt Pinfield Back on the Radio

From thesocalsound.org
After surviving a stroke in January that left him in a coma for two months, Mr. Pinfield has recovered and rejoined the airwaves of 88.5 FM (he originally started in March 2024) with playlists and tracks perfect for SoCal. Whether you know it or not, he had a huge sonic influence on America. I’m looking forward to listening to his show when I’m heading home from work. Weekdays, 4-6pm on 88.5, the SoCal Sound (which broadcasts from Cal State Northridge).
I can’t help but mention another legendary radio DJ/musician/renaissance man that blesses our airwaves with music that you’ve probably never heard before - Henry Rollins has a radio show that airs on Saturday nights at 10pm on 89.9 KCRW.

💦 Glendale’s Pacific Park Splash Pad Upgraded and Open

Pacific Park just wrapped up a major renovation aimed at making playtime safer, cooler, and more accessible for everyone. Here’s what’s new:
☂️ New shade structures over both the 2–5 and 5–12-year-old playgrounds
Poured-in-place safety surfacing for more cushioned, safer play
♿ ADA-compliant improvements for better accessibility
Redesigned splash pad with upgraded water play features
New water recycling system for more sustainable splash time
🚻 Fully redesigned restrooms with improved safety features
Replastered pool for a refreshed swim experience
Glendale’s not the only place in the Valley where the kids can get some relief from the heat and have a blast at the same time courtesy of splash pads. Here are some other locations to keep in mind when the inevitable heatwave hits and a beach day is just too much effort.
San Fernando Recreation Park and Aquatic Center - 208 Park Ave. San Fernando, CA 91340
Mason Park - 10500 Mason Ave, Chatsworth, CA 91311. When we went last year it was not functioning, so fair warning, have a back-up plan just in case. Northridge park isn’t too far away.
Northridge Park Aquatic Center - 10058 Reseda Blvd, Northridge, CA 91324. I’m looking forward to taking our kid here, they’ve got water slides and wade pools, too.
Panorama City Recreation Center - 8600 Hazeltine Ave., Panorama City, CA 91402. A review on Google Maps from 11 months ago indicates the splash pad was out of commission indefinitely.
If you want to call the attention of the powers that be to any of these splash pads being out of commission, take 10 minutes to complete the LA Parks and Rec Park Needs Assessment Survey.
📖 Public Library Community Survey
In case you weren’t already aware, the LA Public Library offers waaaay more than just books. They’ve got tons of resources ranging from digital comic books to e-classes that can help you gain some new skills, and business resources if you’re a business owner or entrepreneur.
They launched a survey to get community feedback. It takes about 10 minutes to complete (if you have as many opinions to share as I do), with questions about your familiarity with what the library offers, how you think the library could improve, and what kinds of programs or services they should offer. Whatever your opinion, share it so that the folks in charge know what the good people of the Valley care about.
Plus, take the survey and you have a chance to win $200 gift card.
☣️ Public Health Announcement Regarding Measles
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating one case of measles in a Los Angeles County resident who recently travelled internationally.
Public Health is investigating multiple exposure sites related to this case. Individuals who were at the following public locations during the dates and times below may be at risk of developing measles due to potential exposure to this case. The risk is particularly high for any exposed individuals who are not immunized against measles.

🏀 Lakers Return to Palm Springs + Preseason Tickets Now on Sale + a Sweepstakes
The Los Angeles Lakers have announced their 2025–26 preseason schedule, featuring four games in three cities from October 3–17—and yes, tickets are on sale now for select games!
🏜️ A Homecoming in the Desert
The preseason tips off October 3 at Acrisure Arena in Greater Palm Springs, where the Lakers will face the Phoenix Suns. For longtime fans, this stop is more than just another game—it’s a return to roots. Palm Springs was the official training camp site during the “Showtime” era, back when Magic, Kareem, and Worthy were putting in the preseason work under the desert sun. After a 26-year break, the Lakers came back to Coachella Valley in 2023, and now they’re continuing the tradition.
🏠 Two Games at Home
Back at Crypto.com Arena, Lakers fans can catch the team twice:
Oct. 12 vs. Golden State Warriors
Oct. 17 vs. Sacramento Kings
🎟️ Ticket Info:
Oct. 3 (Palm Springs): Available now via Ticketmaster or at the Acrisure Arena box office
Oct. 12 & 17 (Los Angeles): On sale starting in August
Oct. 15 (Las Vegas): Available at AXS.com or the T-Mobile Arena box office
Get your seats early—especially if you want to see the next generation of Lakers take the court before the regular season tips off!
